How to Keep Rodents Out This Fall

As the temperatures drop and the air turns crisp, humans aren’t the only ones seeking warmth and comfort. Rodents start looking for a cozy place to nest, and your home might be at the top of their list.

Once inside, these uninvited guests can cause serious problems: chewing wires, contaminating food, and even spreading disease. The good news? A few simple steps can keep them out before they ever make themselves at home.

✅ Seal Up Entry Points

Inspect the outside of your home — especially around doors, windows, vents, and foundation gaps. Even an opening as small as a quarter is enough for a rat to squeeze through.

Use weatherstripping, caulk, or steel wool to seal any cracks or gaps you find. Pay close attention to the garage door and areas where pipes or cables enter your home.

✅ Store Food Securely

Keep food — for both people and pets — in airtight containers. Avoid leaving snacks on counters, and clean up spills promptly.

Rats and mice have an excellent sense of smell and can easily be attracted by crumbs or open packaging.

✅ Declutter Key Areas

Garages, attics, and basements are ideal nesting spots. Clear away piles of paper, boxes, and fabric that can be used for nesting materials. The cleaner and more organized the space, the less appealing it is to pests.

Even with preventive steps, determined rodents can still find a way in. That’s where we come in.
